Water's Guardian Angels

These works were built more than 2000 years ago by the Nazcas, a pre-Columbian people known mainly for its immense lines and drawings of animals drawn in the desert.

Over the past few decades, Kenya has been hit hard by the effects of global warming. Traditionally, the southern regions of the country enjoyed a short rainy season from October to December and a longer one from March to May.

But in recent decades, predatory tourism has been competing with subak for control of land and water. In 2012, Bali had nearly 1,200 subak and 100,000 hectares of rice fields.

Perched at more than 3500 meters above sea level, Ladakh is one of the highest inhabited plateaus in the world. In this mountainous desert, where the sky offers only a hundred millimeters of rain per year, only glaciers make life flow.

In northern Kenya, in the heart of the Rift Valley, Namunyak is one of the wildest regions on our planet. The sky is dry, the soil arid. It's a unique ecosystem, shaped over thousands of years by heat and dust.

It is run by the farmers themselves, grouped in water user associations, whose rules they set. In case of disputes between two users of the system, they turn to The Tribunal de las Aguas de la Vega de la Valencia.
