Timing is everything in Alaska, and a new season brings much to do. Watch as people and wildlife emerge from 65 days of darkness and hibernation to greet spring, known locally as "break-up," as the rivers thaw and temperatures warm above freezing.
Summer days may last 24 hours in the far north, but before winter returns, the people and wildlife of Alaska must move quickly to make the most of the warm weather's bounty, including 30 million salmon that arrive at its shores.
While some thrive in the cold, many of Alaska's residents must prepare or even flee before the brutal weather locks them in for six dark and icy months. Marvel at how the northern lights mark the beginning of the end of this challenging season.
