Raised by poor hippie farmers, singer/songwriter Ana Egge has a unique approach to the world. By only 17 years of age, she’d crafted her own guitar and wowed the Austin music scene...but when the business didn't feel right, she retreated to New Mexico, built her own house and started over. 12 years and six independent records later, Ana's married and living in Brooklyn when she finally gets another big shot - to record with the legendary Steve Earle. What should be a straightforward artistic process is complicated when Ana feels compelled to use the new record to tackle issues surrounding the mental illness of a younger sister, another artist whose time in Hollywood has spiralled into self-destruction. When Ana takes the new record on the road, its deeply personal (and confrontational) content threatens relationships back home, and as she and her wife struggle to conceive their own family, a humiliating European tour drives Ana to the brink of walking away again. BRIGHT SHADOW offers a truly intimate portrait of an artist's perseverance and a revealing window into the emotional journey of a struggling performer. By combining old VHS of the Egge family, highlighting Ana’s haunting voice and personal song writing through heartfelt live performances, and pointing an unflinching eye toward painful career moments, the film offers a revealing and inspiring take on the artists' experience.
