Go Forth Children

The countryside is green and the soldiers are dressed in blue with red trousers. The armies are on the move. The war is still young, as are the men, "Here we are!" cry lieutenants Porchon and Genevoix.

The illusion is quickly shattered, both for Genevoix and the men he commands. The first fighting is violent. The French are constantly obliged to fall-back. Maurice Genevoix kills his first Germans. The group loses its first man.

The war is at a standstill and both sides are in the trenches. It is icy cold as another battle begins, and the troops try to stay busy. Bombardments regularly result in victims and the boys in blue have stopped singing. They are sent to Les Éparges.

Les Éparges is a village in the Meuse under a strategic hill. Seen from below it is a terrifying rocky peak. The Germans are at the top, they must be moved.

Close to Death

Attacks against the rocky peak held by the Germans are intensifying. Lieutenant Porchon, Genevoix's friend, with whom he shared everything, is killed.
