Red Sorghum
The directorial debut of internationally acclaimed filmmaker Zhang Yimou, Red Sorghum also marked the emergence of acting superstar Gong Li and offers a lush and lusty portrayal of peasant Life. As outlined by an unseen, anonymous narrator, Red Sorghum tells of the life between a woman, the narrator's 'Grandmother' (exquisitely played by Gong Li) and the narrator's 'Grandfather' ). The woman is a bride-to-be en-route to an arranged wedding with an aging leprous winemaker when she is saved from a bandit attack by one of the bearers of her sedan. Red Sorghum is a sweeping and yet intensely personal historical epic.
