When Carlin (a staggering performance from a young Ray Winstone) is transferred from one borstal to another after assaulting an officer, he sets about becoming the daddy of the wing. Ruling the roost by using ever increasing amounts of violence, Carlin becomes a vital cog in a rigged system. The film was banned by the BBC in 1977, and was promptly re-made by its original director Alan Clarke, and released in cinemas in 1979. The film also stars David Threlfall, and Phil Daniels.
