This Palme d'Or-winning epic is directed and written by Emir Kusturica. Blacky and Marko are communist comrades. However, things change when Marko has a crush on Natalija, an opportunistic blonde pursued by Blacky. As the war comes to an end, Marko finally gets the chance to declare his feelings about Natalija after Blacky is seriously injured in an accident and is "hidden" in the cellar. Love leads to lie; a lie causes war, and war tears friendship. This is not only the story of Blacky, Marko, and Natalija, but also the history of the Balkan countries from the beginning of WWII, to the Cold War, and to the Yugoslav Wars.
