Set in the near future, the world is obsessed with a new drug - people can live out their wildest fantasies while they dream by wearing a genetically-modified worm in their ear as they sleep. Luckless loser Charles uses a worm to win friends and get a girlfriend in his fantasy. But when some nasty side effects arise, the manufacturer withdraws the worms from sale, and those addicted to them have to go to horrific lengths to keep their brains detached from reality and keep living their fantasies.
