Mike takes over the responsibility of organising the Heck family Christmas while Frankie practises for a solo that she is singing at midnight mass.

Mike and Frankie decide to cut off their cable, while Brick and his friends are forced to socialise during recess.

Mike's dream comes to fruition when Frankie's boss, Mr Ehlert, offers him two tickets to the Final Four. Unfortunately, Frankie's uncle dies, and the funeral is set for the same day, leaving the two in a battle and Frankie making Mike choose which life event is more important to him.

Frankie convinces her colourful clan to host a foreign exchange student. However, their Japanese guest has no interest in spending quality time with them.

In order to get her own car, Sue gets a job at a mall eatery. Mike and Frankie learn that Brick hasn't been attending any classes and Axl spends nights at home to avoid his horrible roommate.

Mike tries to make it up to Brick when he inadvertently spills the beans about his crush. Meanwhile, Sue begins her search for the boy she smooched.
