When a cleaner in the London Underground is fatally bitten by a giant bug, Nick Cutter and his team are called in to investigate. Their search takes them into a labyrinth of disused tunnels where events take a much deadlier turn.

A municipal swimming pool becomes the setting for the latest creature sighting, when a lifeguard is devoured by an ancient marine predator. As the attacks spread to a local boating lake, Cutter receives a mysterious message drawing him back into the past in search of his long-lost wife.

Helen Cutter uses the opening of a new anomaly to escape from custody at the Home Office, leaving in her wake a flock of dodos. Tom and Duncan steal one of the birds, unaware that they carry a deadly parasite, and when Tom is bitten and begins to feel the urge to attack people, he seeks out Abby for answers. As Abby desperately tries to evade Tom's lethal bite, the others try to track him down before a pandemic is unleashed.
