An assassination attempt on President Bartlet leaves some of his team fighting for their lives, and a crisis in Iraq requires immediate action.

The president is found unconscious shortly before his State of the Union address, and the first lady doesn't believe the official explanation.

President Bartlet lets his emotions get the better of him when responding to the downing of an American jet and C.J. hounds Sam for trying to rescue a call-girl from her job.

The staff tries to recover their spirits in the aftermath of the assassination attempt. Toby suggests the use of the president's newfound popularity to crack down on extremist groups.

Sam and Toby are dispatched to secure the release of President Bartlet's Supreme Court nominee, who has been jailed for alleged drunken driving.

As the president leaves the White House to do some Christmas shopping, Toby finds out about a war hero who died alone, and a persistent reporter begins to win over C.J. for a date.
