Drama series set in a Norfolk market town. Peter Kingdom's brother has disappeared, his clothes were found on the local beach but no body has been discovered. Peter is a solicitor, and as he puts on a brave face and returns to work, two cases land on his desk. One is about planning regulations, and the other concerns the untimely death of a woman in her jacuzzi - in the company of her regular male escort.

Aeste, a young woman from Eastern Europe, arrives in distress at Peter's office. Her baby has been stolen and she accuses her former employer, Jack Thriplow, a local farmer, of taking her child.

There is still no word from Peter's missing brother Simon so Peter happily takes on the role of surrogate father to Daniel. The Women's Institute calls for Peter's help in a bid to save the local lighthouse. Sidney Snell and pub landlord Ted are practising for their annual horn dance, but there is an accident during the rehearsal. Lyle and Peter get caught up in a burger war. Honor develops a soft spot for Lyle of which he is totally unaware.

Peter is asked to help a local fisherman when his insurance company refuses to pay for his trawler, lost in an explosion. In addition, Snell claims the council has started a campaign of harassment against him.

Peter tries to help his latest client - a well-to-do antiques dealer who is desperate for a divorce because her husband has recently started cross-dressing. Lyle helps local horse trainer Herb, who wants to lease a nearby field for his prize racer. When he visits the field, he is horrified to discover a group of travellers have set up camp and demands that Lyle gets rid of them. Hill confronts Peter and demands his money back.
