Melissa O'Neil

Melissa O'Neil was a Canadian pop singer and actress best known for her recurring role on the science-fiction series "Dark Matter" (Syfy, 2015-). Born and raised in Alberta Canada, O'Neil grew up loving musical theater. She had a big voice and loved to sing, so the majority of her formative years were spent acting in local musical theater productions. She never saw her love of singing and musical theater as anything more than a hobby, however, and made her living working for a day care center. But in 2005, almost on a whim, she decided to audition for the singing competition show "Canadian Idol" (CTV, 2003-08). O'Neil impressed the judges wither her vocals, and eventually made it all the way to the final round and won. O'Neil made history by becoming the show's first female winner, and immediately set out to record an album. Her self-titled debut album was released in November of 2005, and O'Neil spent the next couple years touring in support of it. By the late 2000s, however, she decided to put her budding pop music career on hold in an effort to return to her first love, musical theater. She started appearing in musicals throughout Toronto, and soon earned the attention of Broadway. Within a few years O'Neil was appearing in Broadway musicals like "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Les Miserables," which further raised her talent profile. Then around 2015 O'Neil began appearing on the Canadian TV shows "This Life" (CBC Television, 2015-16) and "Rogue" (Audience, 2013-17), before landing her breakout role as Two on "Dark Matter." In 2017 O'Neil joined the cast of the series "Lost Generation" (Go90, 2017-), appearing on 5 episodes of the musical drama.
