James, injured and unable to continue on in the army, goes in search of a worthwhile occupation. He writes a letter which is published in 'The Times'. It concerns employment for injured ex-servicemen and attracts the attention of the Conservative Party. He agrees to stand in a by-election. Edward and Daisy are struggling to make ends meet. Edward argues with Hudson when Hudson discovers their poverty.
