Drama. The community is shocked when the body of Ballarat Hospital's first female doctor is found hanging in the laundry. District nurse Mattie O'Brien and her friend Linda make the grim discovery after a night of celebrating Macdougal's win in the 1959 Melbourne Cup. Mattie tries in vain to resuscitate Dr Hazel Mahoney. No one can understand why such a successful woman would take her own life.Police Surgeon Dr Lucien Blake is suspicious the minute he arrives at the crime scene and his suspicions are quickly confirmed when evidence suggests Dr Hazel was dead before her body was hung up in the laundry and sets out to find the murderer.
