January 1916. Against a background of patriotic excitement, Hazel Bellamy treats all the servants to a day at the seaside. For Mrs Bridges the cook, it is a time of strain. The cause - a growing relationship between her and a middle-aged admirer. James is home on leave and is increasingly frustrated with how comfortable his army staff job is. Hazel understands his longing to rejoin his regiment and decides to help him.
