After Patty (Glenn Close) handpicks Ellen (Rose Byrne) to be a first-year Associate at the high-profile law firm, Hewes & Associates, life will never be the same for either one of them. Ellen, newly-engaged to her boyfriend David Connor (Noah Bean), is thrilled to join the ranks and be trained under Patty and Patty's trusted Senior Associate, Tom Shayes (Tate Donovan). But Ellen soon realizes that the price of success may be much higher than what she's willing to pay. Currently, the focus of Hewes & Associates attention is a class action lawsuit targeting the allegedly corrupt Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson), one of the country's wealthiest CEOs. Patty, on behalf of her clients, is attempting to bankrupt and personally destroy Frobisher. As Patty battles with Frobisher and his attorney Ray Fiske (Zeljko Ivanek) Ellen Parsons will be front and center witnessing just what it takes to win at all costs.
When Ellen (Rose Byrne) and David (Noah Bean) gather with family to celebrate their recent engagement, Katie (Anastasia Griffith) reveals her paranoia surrounding her involvement in the Frobisher (Ted Danson) case and her safety. Trying to alleviate her fear, Ellen assures Katie that they can trust Patty (Glenn Close) to help them, but when she brings Katie to the office, things do not go the way she anticipated. Ellen confronts Patty about her meeting with Katie and begins to wonder how much she trusts her new boss. Meanwhile, Arthur Frobisher begins to weigh his options when he notices his family is being affected by his tattered image in the media.
When Patty (Glenn Close) and Ray Fiske (Zeljko Ivanek) are called in by the judge about the Frobisher case, Patty is asked to come up with a substantial reason to continue with their litigation by the end of the week. Looking for clues, Patty and Tom (Tate Donovan) learn about Katie's (Anastasia Griffith) new friend. Meanwhile, Patty fears for the safety of her family when her life is threatened and she is forced to take a closer look at her son, and Ellen (Rose Byrne) is entrusted with a responsibility that may help her professionally but conflict with her personal life.
While down in Florida for business, Katie (Anastasia Griffith) partied the night away in one of Florida's hippest nightclubs and saw something she shouldn't have - Arthur Frobisher (Ted Danson) with an unknown man in a parking lot. That one night, five years ago, has left her in a dire position - right in the center of the Frobisher class action lawsuit. If Katie correctly identifies the man with Frobisher, Patty (Glenn Close) will have sufficient reason to continue litigation. Bravely, Katie prepares herself for the ugly as she decides to testify and turn Patty's case around. Unwittingly, she relies on Gregory Malina (Peter Facinelli) - a married man who was with her that night- to tell her the name of the man with Frobisher. While giving her deposition, Frobisher's lawyer, Ray Fiske (Zeljko Ivanek), burns her on the spot; however, it isn't what Katie saw in the parking lot that is of importance but what she may have seen later that night. Meanwhile, Ellen (Rose Byrne) and David (Noah Bean), find it hard to make time for each other and get into an altercation over Katie's involvement in the Frobisher case. Written by: Mark Fish. Frobisher (Ted Danson) pushes Ray Fiske (Zeljko Ivanek) to take a more aggressive approach with Patty (Glenn Close), who is on shaky ground with the clients. Tom (Tate Donovan) reckons with his own career options and seeks the advice of an outspoken friend (Donal Logue). Written by: Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler, Daniel Zelman, & Mark Fish. Patty cautiously pursues Gregory, eager to learn his secrets before it's too late. An emboldened Frobisher attempts to salvage his legacy with an unconventional strategy. Lila ominously reappears in David's life, further testing his relationship with Ellen.
