Grow, Cook, Eat

Michael Kelly and Karen O'Donohoe show viewers how to grow Ireland's most popular vegetable, the potato, from start to finish and visit a thriving community garden which was once just a derelict site. They also show how our brown bin waste is made into compost and given to farmers to spread on their land, free of charge.

A homegrown tomato is a delectable treat and, while a little TLC is required to grow them, it's worth the effort. Michael Kelly visits Grantstown Nurseries in Ballygunner, County Waterford, to learn about tomato growing on a commercial scale.

Michael Kelly heads to Dublin and visits Airfield House and Gardens, Karen O'Donohoe is back in Cork looking at another great community growing project, and chef Jessica Murphy prepares roasted pea soup and pea dip in the `Grow, Cook, Eat' kitchen.

Michael visits a garden to hear more about non toxic ways of dealing with garden slugs. Karen goes to Kilbarrack Fire Station in Dublin to learn how water harvesting has helped save the fire service over a million euros.

Courgettes are the main vegetable showcased this week. Karen visits a community garden in Goleen, West Cork which provides a much needed place to meet people and learn new skills.

Kale is a highly nutritious vegetable thrives in both the raised bed and container. Karen O'Donohoe goes shopping for the nine vegetables most commonly bought by Irish households and Michael meets Paul Brophy, an advocate for Irish horticulture farmers, to talk about why commercial growers are in decline.
