DCI Caroline Goode first heard of Banaz Mahmod when her boyfriend reported her missing. Caroline discovered that Banaz had been to the police five times to report threats to life, even presenting a list of people wanting to kill her for shaming her family. Caroline searches for the people on Banaz' list and questions ringleader Ari, who denies the charges. But after speaking to estranged sister Bekhal and Kurdish activist, Dianna, Caroline soon realises that this could be a murder enquiry. It is confirmed when one of the suspects confesses to the group rape, torture and murder of Banaz.

Caroline is relieved when a lead from the phone taps sends the search to Birmingham, where Banaz' body is found, but the DNA evidence is destroyed when a water pipe bursts. Keily's 'phone farming' pays off and Banaz' father is charged, as is Uncle Ari and soon the case is brought to the Old Bailey. It looks like the defence will win, until Bekhal gives courageous evidence behind a screen and the two men are handed life sentences. Caroline continues on to get the first ever extradition from Iraq to the UK to bring the last two perpetrators to justice.
