Amy Dorrit finds employment as a seamstress for the fearsome Mrs Clenham in order to pay off her father's debt. But, all is turned upside down when Mrs Clenham's son returns from China.

Arthur strikes up a friendship with Amy as he settles back into life in England. Meanwhile, in France, the sinister Rigaud decides to return to England.

John Chivery, sensing competition, proposes to Amy, as Arthur also sees competition in love from Henry Gowan for Pet. Elsewhere Cavalletto and Rigaud arrive in London.

Pancks continues his investigation with the help of John Chivery. Arthur proposes to Pet and Tattycoram leaves to work for Miss Wade. Rigaud introduces himself to Mrs Clenham.

The Dorrit's finally leave Marshalsea, where they meet Rigaud and the Gowans. Amy continues to struggle to adapt to her new wealthy status while Arthur throws himself into work.

Fanny and Edmund continue their liaison despite the efforts of Mrs Merdle. Arthur meets Rigaud, returned from Venice, and uncovers his dark past.
