When a strange noise fills people all over Britain with a violent rage against modern technology, they begin to go mad and start smashing machines. Young Nicky Gore struggles to understand what's happening...

Separated from her parents and alone in a deserted city, Nicky finds a surrogate home with a group of Sikhs.

Nicky and the Sikhs continue their search for a safe place to live, and settle at Brooker's Farm. But soon they find themselves accused of being "The Devil's Children" by superstitious locals.

The Sikhs, with Nicky's help, are now trading with the local village; but the villagers remain very suspicious - until the arrival of a much more sinister group of strangers. Suddenly the village is attacked and the children, including Nicky, are taken hostage.

Nicky manages to rescue the village children from the bandits and track down her aunt, but her troubles are by no means over when the farm is visited by a witch-finder.

Nicky, accused of being a witch, is on trial for her life; and it looks as if the verdict is going to be guilty...
