Working-class Jane Andrews wants more for her life and is unlucky in love. On the brink of losing all hope, Jane receives a letter inviting her to interview for a job with Sarah, the Duchess of York at Buckingham Palace. Securing the job, she moves to London - but life in the palace is gruelling and Jane struggles to fit in. In an unexpected moment of vulnerability, Jane and Sarah find common ground in their experiences of love and betrayal, and the two begin to form a close bond.

Jane and the Duchess grow ever closer as both experience break-ups at the same time. Immersed in a new circle of London's elite, Jane meets dashing businessman Luis and the two begin a relationship, but tensions with Luis soon erupt on a holiday in Greece and Jane becomes increasingly unstable. As Jane's carefully constructed composure starts to fracture and puts her position with the Duchess at risk, could businessman Tommy Cressman prove to be her happy ending?

Jane believes that marriage with boyfriend Tommy is just around the corner, but cracks soon appear in the relationship and a toxic pattern starts to emerge. Now living together, Jane and Tommy try to integrate into each other's social circles - however, some of their friends are disapproving of the relationship. Confronted with the sudden appearance of a ghost from her past at a party, Jane starts to unravel and her relationship with Tommy hangs in the balance.

Jane's fairytale falls apart when she finds herself at the centre of a police investigation - released on bail, Jane reconnects with an old friend from palace life whose unexpected support gives her hope. Back in London, Jane faces a trial at the Old Bailey - as the prosecution and defence battle it out, Jane starts to lose her grip on reality and makes a shocking allegation when she takes to the stand as the prosecution continue to put pressure on her about the inconsistencies in her story.
