Peter Newman

A former sportscaster, film producer Peter Newman took the first step toward his desired field overseeing the documentary portrait "Muhammad Ali: One More Miracle." After his first hands-on experience as a narrative production executive for Robert Altman's comedic feminist examination, "Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" (1982), Newman emerged as a producer distinguished by a strong tendency to work with the film industry's leading arthouse directors. In addition to producing two of Altman's films (the other being "O.C. and Stiggs"), Newman has formed alliances with such notable independents as Wayne Wang ("Smoke"), Jonathan Demme ("Swimming to Cambodia"), and John Sayles ("The Secret of Roan Inish"). His collaboration with writer-director Noah Baumbach on the autobiographical Brooklyn family drama "The Squid and the Whale" proved to be one of his winningest ventures, earning an Academy Award as well as top honors at the Spirit Awards and the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. Newman is married to actress and casting director Antonia Dauphin.
