Cathryn Damon

The pinnacle of late actress Cathryn Damon's career was bittersweet. Between 1978 and '81, she was nominated three times at the Emmy Awards for the prestigious honor of Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on the lauded sitcom "Soap." However, when she finally won the prize in '80, she was not there to accept--she chose not to appear at that year's awards ceremony in support of a strike by the Screen Actors Guild. Nonetheless, her portrayal of Mary Campbell in the spoof of daytime soap operas will forever have its place in the pantheon of great TV ladies. As a veteran of the Broadway stage, Damon segued back and forth between theater and small-screen roles. Her other big run on TV was as Cassie Parker, one half of the landlord couple that rented out a Victorian house to the family of the title character (Emmanuel Lewis) on the '83-'87 ABC sitcom "Webster." Damon's final role was a supporting role in the '88 John Hughes comedy "She's Having a Baby."
