Desmond Tutu

Desmond Tutu found incredible success as an accomplished actor, appearing in a variety of films throughout his Hollywood career. He appeared in a number of television specials, including "Land of Fear, Land of Courage" (1982-83), "A Challenge From South Africa: U.S. Churches Respond" (CBS, 1985-86) and "Witness to Apartheid" (PBS, 1986-87). He also appeared in "The Installation of Desmond Tutu as Archbishop of Capetown" (1986-87), "We Shall Overcome" (PBS, 1987-88) and "The Koppel Report: News From Earth" (ABC, 1988-89). He also appeared in the TV special "Washington National Cathedral" (PBS, 1992-93). Following that project, he appeared in "Ulibambe Lingashoni" (1992), "Mandela" (1997) and the documentary "Long Night's Journey Into Day" (2000) with Peter Biehl. He spent the early 2000s and the 2010s tackling film roles in "Fierce Light: When Spirit Meets Action" (2008) with Daryl Hannah, the Madonna documentary "I Am Because We Are" (2008) and the Dalai Lama documentary "When the Dragon Swallowed the Sun" (2010). He also appeared in "Have You Heard from Johannesburg?" (2010). Most recently, Tutu appeared on "Fire In The Blood" (2013) with William Hurt. Desmond Tutu died on December 26, 2021 in Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa at the age of 90.
