A Chinese Ghost Story III

Tsui Hark and Ching Siu-Tung join forces once again to conclude the Chinese Ghost Story series with a fireworks' display of a final instalment, showcasing all of Ching's directorial flair and cinematic splendour. Set one hundred years after the events of its predecessor, the film introduces us to the kind-hearted but blundering Fong (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Hard Boiled), apprenticing to become a monk under his stern Sifu (Lau Shun, One Upon a Time in China). The pair are on a journey to transport a golden statue of Buddha to the neighbouring province, when they're attacked by bandits and must flee to a desolate temple. But what should be hiding there but the tree demon from the first film, who sets its ghostly thralls Siu-Cheuk (Joey Wong, The Diary of a Big Man) and Siu-Dip (Nina Li Chi, Pedicab Driver) to capture Fong's master. But the nefarious tree demon is still oblivious to human love, and when Siu-Cheuk and Fong fall for each other, they hatch a plan to save Fong's master and defeat the monster once and for all. Bursting with filmmaking inventiveness, memorable characters and a moving central love story, A Chinese Ghost Story III is a fitting conclusion to Tsui Hark and Ching Siu-Tung's epic trilogy that helped launch a new wave of Chinese fantasy films.
