Pink Floyd - Rock Legends

Pink Floyd are arguably the most influential progressive, psychedelic rock band of the 20th century. The first incarnation of Pink Floyd met at London’s Regent Street Polytechnic School in the early 1960s, a time when rock and roll exploded in popularity throughout the UK. Art student Syd Barrett was introduced to the group and with his own songs he took over the front man role and gave them the name of Pink Floyd which was derived from the names of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. As well as Syd’s art school background, the Beatles proved an inspiration to the early stages of the band. In 1967 the band signed a deal with EMI and released their debut, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn The promotional single, Arnold Layne, was surprisingly banned from some radio stations for its lyrical content Barrett’s lyrics on The Piper At The Gates of Dawn covering fairytales and scarecrows pitted against the psychedelic instrumentation tapped into the British consciousness and moved on to the charts. Barrett struggled with the success of the band and whilst touring the US, it began to show. With Syd gone and Dave Gilmour on board the band ventured into new territory with experimental albums Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother and Meddle. In 1973 Pink Floyd released The Dark Side of the Moon.
