Hortense Cumberbatch is a successful middle class optometrist in London, who decides to trace her roots following the death of her adoptive mother. Since Hortense is black, she is naturally baffled when she finds out that her birth mother, Cynthia Purley, is a white working class woman and downwardly mobile. The finding of this new old family has a turn on Hortense, and getting more involved in their lives drastically changes hers as well... Earning five Academy Award nominations, “Secrets & Lies” is one of Mike Leigh’s very most successful films. It received the Golden Palm in Cannes, as well as the Best Actress award (Brenda Blethyn) and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury (Mike Leigh).
