James and Anne Manning are enjoying their new life in the country. He's obsessed by work but reluctantly agrees she can host a party for the neighbours so long as he need not attend. Among those invited is louche landowner Bill Bule, who fascinates Anne, but a tragic accident leaves the husband of Maggie, the Mannings' cleaner, dead. One of the three is responsible but they all have reasons to hide the truth.
