In the early 1950s, as the Iron Curtain cuts Germany in two, a young factory worker from the East named Anna secretly crosses the border to reclaim her son, who lives with his grandparents in the West. Along the way she meets Carl, a border policeman who helps her. As love grows between them, so does the political divide that makes their union impossible.
