Niles and Maris have been separated for a long time. Now however, it appears that Maris has changed his mind in terms of the divorce. She misses her ex-husband and wants them to move in together.

Frasier receives a call from a distraught wife who believes her husband, a German fencing instructor, is having an affair. Then Niles mentions how much time Maris is spending on her new passion - fencing.

Maris disappears without a trace for two days. When a frantic Niles finds out that she has simply flown to New York for a shopping trip, he angrily confronts her, leading to their separation.

Frasier invites Roz's insurance agent friend Ann - with whom he once shared a disastrous date - round for dinner in an attempt to get a good deal on his lapsed insurance, but an accident with spilt mayonnaise leads to her staying longer than he had planned. Elsewhere, murder suspect Maris enlists Niles' help to flee the country.
