Tom goes missing after separating from his father on the way to school. Ellie and Carver question Lars Pierson, the backpacker seen with Danny just weeks before his death. The Millers marriage becomes tense as the search for Tom looks hopeless. Raymond Connelly gives Beth some clues about Tom, and she and Mark join in the search, along with Paul, who finds Tom's bicycle.

Carver refuses to be hospitalised and continues with the investigation, despite warnings it could cause his death. Renee learns of Carver's collapse, and Carver contacts Raymond in a desperate attempt to solve the case. Owen blackmails Carver into giving him an exclusive or he will publicly reveal Carver's health problems.
