First in a three-part series in which actress Caroline Quentin makes an epic journey through the Indian subcontinent from north to south. She begins in the colourful city of Varanasi - the religious and cultural capital of India - where she attends an evening ceremony in which thousands of people light lamps and pray to the River Ganges. Caroline then travels to Rajasthan and Jodhpur.

Three weeks into her journey, Caroline travels by camel to Jaisalmer and learns about the the magnificent `living fort' - one of the most endangered monuments in the world. She then heads back to Ahmedabad in Gujarat where she meets a local family who teach her a traditional dance ahead of the night-time Navratri festivities. Then, Caroline journeys to India's most modern city, Mumbai.

In the final part of Caroline's journey through the Indian subcontinent she travels through Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu right down to the southern tip of the country. Along the way, she meets a snake guru and has an encounter with a cobra, visits a tea plantation, helps to wash some elephants, witnesses a school spelling competition and finally bathes in the holy waters of the Bay of Bengal.
