The Harbour

Following the men and women who keep Aberdeen Harbour running 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Situated on the north-east coast of Scotland, it is one of Britain's oldest businesses and one of Europe's most modern ports. The first programme introduces the Harbour's best known barmaid, Val Morrison of the Crown & Anchor, who is getting ready for a Halloween party in the pub.

Abnormally high winds create dangerous conditions which result in a rare closure of the harbour. Boatman Alan Cowper takes his daughter to try out for Scotland's under-15 football team but faces an excruciating wait to hear whether she gets in. VTS controller Ralph Greig considers a career change, while out at sea saturation diver Terry Dearlove begins the lengthy process of decompression.

Today, trainee harbour pilot Ralph Greig faces a tough test on the simulator on his first day of training. Meanwhile, ex-sailor Ellen Haughland has her heart set on stepping into Ralph's shoes as a VTS controller - can she become Aberdeen's first ever woman in that role? Onboard the Bibby Sapphire, the crew brace themselves for a force ten storm heading directly towards them.

In this edition, fish merchant Doug Rennie contends with a move to a new state-of-the-art fish processing factory. Plus, the Highland Prince loads up with vital supplies for a North Sea oil rig, new pilot Ralph Grieg's training illustrates why he has one of the most dangerous jobs in the harbour, and the harbour chaplain's tireless work to open a seafarer's centre in Aberdeen finally pays off.

The ferry sets sail for Orkney and Shetland with over 380 passengers on board. In the boatman's bothy, Billy Duguid loves two things - a plate of scallops fresh from the North Sea and winding up colleague Craig Massie over their Torry v Footdee rivalry. Elsewhere, pilots Tim Wingate and Jeff Gaskin celebrate the births of their respective babies.

The dockers at sea cargo find themselves at the mercy of the weather as they race to prepare a vessel travelling to West Africa and prevent losses of thousands of pounds if the ship is delayed. Boatman Billy Duguid volunteers for some RNLI training in the North Sea. And a cruise ship full of Swedes bound for Balmoral sails in, while the harbour hosts a ship's christening.
