When a brilliant but mentally unstable mathematician dies, his daughter Catherine is visited by one of his former students, who has been studying his late notebooks. While grieving for her loss and dealing with the unwanted attentions of her estranged sister Claire, Catherine - also a mathematician - must come to terms with the possibility that, together with her father's talent, she might have also inherited his insanity.
