Fast-paced thriller in which a lone computer hacker, haunted by the question `What is the Matrix?', descends into a nightmare of alternative realities after he makes contact with a group claiming to know the answer. The film draws on Japanese manga comic books and cyber-punk literature, and makes use of a special-effects technique that appears to alter time perception.
