Kanchivaram
One day, silk weaver Vengadam makes a promise in front of his whole village that his infant daughter, whom he dotes on, will grow up and be married in a Kanchivaram silk sari: a cloth so expensive that it takes many, many years for the impoverished people who weave it to save the money to buy their own. As the years pass, Vengadam, drawn to Communism, becomes a political leader and fights for better wages for the weavers.
