Freya is kidnapped by a dangerous new threat, which forces the Mikaelson brothers to put their differences aside to save her. Meanwhile, in Mystic Falls, Elijah and Finn find themselves undesired by Deputy Donovan.

Alaric and Elena receive some disturbing news about a recent murder from Sheriff Forbes, and the Salvatore brothers continue to scheme to kill Klaus, with Stefan turning to Bonnie and Abby, and Damon asking an old friend for help. However, Klaus has plans of his own and holds an unusual dinner party at which he reveals more about his family's violent past - until an unexpected arrival brings the party to an end.

Elena is surprised when she receives an invitation to a ball - and when Damon and Stefan hear that the party is being held at Klaus's mansion, they insist on going as well. Caroline and Matt are also invited to the festivities, each by an unexpected admirer. During the course of the evening, Elena learns about a shocking plan which could lead to numerous deaths.

Damon and Stefan form a new plan to destroy Klaus, and they enlist Elena, Caroline and Matt to help. Klaus returns and forces Bonnie to perform a spell. He and Rebekah also convince a reluctant Finn to co-operate - but Rebekah has her own scheme to take revenge on Damon. Stefan is led into a dangerous confrontation with Klaus and, later, to a heartbreaking moment with Elena.

Elena is frustrated to find that her friends do not agree with her about how they should deal with the Originals' power struggle, and Bonnie and Abby learn that they have an important role to play in a magic ritual. Meanwhile, Elijah gives Stefan and Damon an ultimatum which puts Elena's life at risk, and the brothers turn to Alaric and Meredith for help. However, the path they choose leads to a horrifying decision.
