While celebrating his birthday, Stefan receives a surprise visit from one of his oldest vampire friends, who also finds time to give Elena some unsolicited relationship advice. Damon convinces Caroline to try and retrieve his medallion from Bonnie, and Sheriff Forbes is pleased when Damon offers to join her hunt, but she is unaware that he is the one she is searching for.

Everyone in town is preparing for the Founder's Day celebrations, but John has a darker plan in store which threatens all the vampires in the area. Elsewhere, Stefan is uncomfortable with Damon's new attitude towards Elena, but she is more worried about repairing her relationship with her brother. Meanwhile, Tyler has a strange experience.

Mason reveals more about the Lockwood family curse to Tyler, while Stefan and Damon clash over how to deal with the werewolf. Elena tries to prevent Jeremy from getting involved, but he makes an effort to hang out with Tyler. Elsewhere, Mason gives Sheriff Forbes some startling information which leads to a night of terror, confessions and heartbreak.
