Stefan goes to extremes to find out the reason that Katherine returned to Mystic Falls, and is shocked when she tells him what really happened back in 1864. Meanwhile, Damon tries a new tactic to learn more about Mason, but is he making a dangerous enemy? Elsewhere, Tyler demands Mason tell him the truth about their family, and Katherine delivers an ultimatum which leaves Elena and Stefan with few options.
