Junior doctor Max Liebermann, son of a wealthy Jewish businessman in 1906 Vienna, is undertaking research in the new discipline of psychotherapy much to the disgust of his professor. As part of his understanding the criminal mind, he is given permission to shadow Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt, who has been called to the murder of a mysterious woman in Leopoldstadt.

Oskar asks Max to help investigate a gruesome series of murders in Vienna's slums.

Max asks Oskar for help when his nephew has a breakdown following a cadet's death while at military school. The school's barbaric traditions are hidden from the public.

Suspicion at the military school centres on an elite group of cadets, solving the case will impact Oskar and Max's professional lives.

In what looks like suicide, a Hungarian countess drowns in her bath in a luxury hotel suite, with scrutiny falling on her psychoanalyst Max Liebermann; Oskar teams up with Max to solve the case.
