Ellie and Levi, a couple with Down syndrome, are expecting a child. Social services has threatened to take the baby away unless they can prove they are capable parents. Abigail and Daniel agree to represent them and try creative ways to come up with a workable parenting plan, but obstacles – including Harry - litter their path. Meanwhile, Lucy prefers to avoid the whole topic of parenthood altogether, which proves difficult when her wife Maggie ups the pressure to start a family. And when Abigail discovers Nico is being bullied at school, she confronts his tormentor but takes it too far.

After catching Frank in a hotel elevator with another woman, Abby has no idea what to believe about her marriage; so instead, she flings herself into finding the truth for her client, Norma Choi. Norma’s husband Bert, an aspiring inventor, drowned and left Norma buried under a mountain of secret debt. But Norma thinks she’s seen Bert on the Internet, very much alive. Abby tracks down Bert and finds him living on a pot farm with a new partner and a new identity. Abby convinces Norma to sue Bert for intentional infliction of emotional harm, which proves difficult because Bert claims to have no memory about his previous life with Norma, or of faking his death. Daniel, meanwhile, is excited to start his first week as partner and Lucy crashes at Joanne’s as she mourns her breakup with Maggie. Harry tries to broker peace between his children and his girlfriend Crystal Steele by luring them to a family dinner under false pretences.

Abby and Daniel represent Karolinka, an Eastern Bloc mail-order bride whose husband, Jim, wants to annul their marriage and have her deported. Jim claims Karolinka pretended to fall in love with him in order to immigrate to Canada. Karolinka claims Jim lied about being a "modern man", when really he’s a sexist bully who expects her to be a "housekeeper with benefits." Meanwhile, Nico and Sofia take the news of their parents’ impending divorce hard. Daniel’s date with another woman who’s perfect on paper is a perfect failure—until a run-in with free-spirited chef Martina salvages the night. Lucy’s hopes for a reconciliation with Maggie are dashed when she runs into Maggie’s new "friend".

The lawyers are bewildered when a young couple begs them to reverse an adoption after learning about the baby’s serious health issues. Abigail determines that the father, Ajay, is driving the decision, and convinces the mother, Jane to fight to keep the baby. Meanwhile, Daniel makes his case for Harry to promote him to partner, after breaking it off with Danielle. Lucy and Maggie’s differences over starting a family come to a head while Abigail and Frank have to deal with their own parenting issues when Sofia is caught making out with a boy Abby calls “Charles Manson kid.”

Abigail is in over her head when she agrees to defend her friend Elaine, who turns out to be an anti-vaxxer. Elaine’s ex-husband refuses to allow their daughter to fly to Germany without first being vaccinated. As Abigail finds a way to challenge this (perfectly reasonable) request, she wonders if her loyalty to a friend is putting Elaine’s daughter at risk. Even worse, Daniel is no help on the case. He is still bitter that Harry rejected his partnership proposal and has completely checked out. Meanwhile, Nico gets suspended for forgery, forcing Abby and Frank to reconsider their parenting plan, and Lucy considers confessing to Maggie about her affair.
