Nathan is discharged from the hospital and returns home to a pile of unpaid bills and an eviction notice. Lucas, Peyton and Brooke host a fund-raiser at the River Court to help Nathan, and Dan also comes to Nathan's rescue, but Dan's gift comes with an ultimatum: he wants Nathan to ask Haley for an annulment.

On the first day of senior year, estranged spouses Nathan and Haley have trouble adjusting as classmates, and Lucas learns a troubling secret about Peyton's mum. Meanwhile, Dan starts to uncover the truth about the dealership fire.

Lying in a coma after his race car accident, Nathan dreams of what life would have been like if Dan had stayed with Karen and Lucas instead of marrying Deb. In this imaginary world, Lucas possesses wealth and stature, and Nathan lives in a less than prominent area of town.

Frustrated by Lucas' growing popularity at school, Nathan searches for Lucas' weak spot. He decides to romantically pursue Lucas' friend Haley as revenge. Meanwhile, Peyton is furious with Lucas for submitting her drawings to the local newspaper without her knowledge.

Lucas and Nathan must bear the brunt of Dan's abuse as he coaches them into the playoffs, pushing them to their limits. Meanwhile, Whitey is stunned by the news that his medical condition may be more serious than he first expected.

Lucas blows his first Varsity game and decides to quit the team. The wedge between Nathan and Peyton continues to grow after Peyton tires of Nathan's poor treatment of Lucas. Meanwhile, Keith forces Karen to deal with her feelings for Dan after she refuses to set foot in the high school gym to support her son.
