A stray dog named Laika was the first living being to be sent into space, fated to die in the name of science. But Laika was not the only animal to suffer cruel experiments during the Space Race, which pitted the Soviet Union against the USA in the name of exploration. Today, legend has it that Laika’s ghost has returned and now roams the streets of Moscow.
