Paul Averhoff won Olympic gold as a marathon runner in 1956. He was a legend. But now, in old age, Paul and his wife Margot have to move into a retirement home after many happy years, as their daughter Birgit flies around the world as a stewardess and can no longer take care of them. Paul suddenly finds himself between a singing circle and handicraft lessons – and feels like he is seemingly dead. So that's it? Not with Paul! He pulls out his old running shoes and begins to run laps in the park, determined to run another marathon one day. Margot is less than enthusiastic, but allows herself to be persuaded to train him as she used to. At first, his roommates think he is crazy, but after a short time their reluctance turns into enthusiasm and, thanks to Paul, they discover that life isn't quite over for them either. Paul follows through with his training – lap after lap, day after day, "on and on," as he has sworn to himself – because he wants to make his dream come true, for himself, for Margot, for his daughter Birgit, and for all the others he wants to prove it to.
