Kokoro

In Japan, in the early years of the 20th century, a tragic tale unfolds in flashbacks. Nobuchi (Masayuki Mori) is still deeply troubled by the years-ago suicide of his closest friend, Kaji (Tatsuya Mihashi), which occurred after Nobuchi impulsively proposed to Shizu (Michiyo Aratama), the girl Kaji loved. In penance, Nobuchi follows Kaji's interrupted path to spiritual contemplation, but when young student Hioki (Shôji Yasui) adopts him as his master, Nobuchi is reminded of his betrayal.
