In a distant future, Tetsuro a human boy who wants his body replaced with a robotic one. This is possible, but to do so he has to reach the Immortal Planet onboard the space train Galaxy Express 999.

On the road to Megalopolis, Tetsuro meets Count Mecha and watches as his mother is killed.
EPISODE 2
The Red Winds of Mars
Tetsuro takes a tour of Mars with a young woman whose desperate boyfriend decides to shoot Tetsuro and steal his 999 pass to get off the planet.
EPISODE 3
Titan's Sleeping Warrior
Tetsuro is rescued from a ghost by Claire, a waitress, but in doing so, Claire is blasted into a million pieces; after finally arriving on Titan, one of Saturn's satellites, they go outside and Maetel is abducted.
EPISODE 4
The Great Bandit Antares
Antares hijacks the 999, takes hostages and forces them to make an unplanned stop; Antares invites Maetel and Tetsuro into his home.
EPISODE 5
Shadow of the Planet of Indecision
On Pluto, Tetsuro is greeted by the graveyard's caretaker, Shadow; Shadow transforms into Tetsuro's mother to lure him and kill him.
EPISODE 6
The Comet Library
Tetsuro is surprised by Comet Station's lack of vertical scope; after being attacked, Tetsuro goes to a doctor who tries to force him into buying a mechanical body.
