Three high school students, Bonnie (Bonnie Law), Juliet (Loretta Lee) and Venus (Sandy Lamb), in their last year in school together, go on their last picnic before their examinations. Taking shelter from a sudden storm in an abandoned temple, Bonnie finds a piece of rope and takes it home. With this rope she brings home a spirit of the Ching Dynasty, Scholar Pik (Raymond Wong), whose archaic ways of thinking obviously clashed with the values held by a twentieth century teenager. Yet, they began to make friends with each other, and Scholar Pik even helped Bonnie to win the first price in the annual school sports day. Bonnie introduces Scholar Pik to Juliet and Venus. The three girls adore Scholar Pik's talent and magic. They begin to depend on his help in everything.During the graduation examination, Juliet is too obsessed with her boyfriend who jilted her and did not do well. Venus attempts to cheat and Scholar Pik thinks it right to expose her. She is caught by the teacher invigilator and Bonnie fails to have Scholar Pik's help. They are very upset with their failure in the examination and Venus attempts suicide. Scholar Pik saves her just in time. Scholar Pik reveals that he committed suicide for the same reason, that he failed the County's Imperial Examination. He makes them realize how foolish it is to escape from their own failure by suicide. The girls begin to derive a more positive attitude towards life through his encouragement. It is also time for Pik to leave the girls for reincarnation. The teachers finally find out that the girls had been disturbed by a spirit so they give the girls a second chance with their examination. The girls know they have to work for their own future.
