The Mad Phoenix
A well-known name in Hong Kong in the 1920's and 30's, our protagonist was a gem of a talent in the world of Cantonese Opera. He was the 13th son of Old Master Kong in the late Qing Dynasty. When still a child, he burnt the curtain of his schoolmaster’s office to avenge a righteous cause. In his university days, he gave up his studies and went to Shanghai in close pursuit of the girl he loved. During the war, he was so disgusted with the way the shows for the servicemen were conducted that he beat up the troupe manager. He led a miserable life after the war and was once sent to a mental hospital for suspected insanity. He spent his last years alone and destitution.
