Beatrice returns with new baby Petra in her arms, and everyone gets soaked by the malfunctioning sprinklers during rehearsals for Aunt Auriel's summer play, so the cast have to relocate temporarily to Kingdom and Kingdom. Elsewhere, Lyle tries to help a young girl who is struggling to cope with caring for her sick mother and younger sister, and Simon's trial is dropped due to a lack of evidence.
There are problems in the office when Gloria doesn't turn up, Beatrice is trying to win Alan back, and Peter encounters his former University Lecturer Professor Barkway, who is accused of discrimination against a student.
Aeste, a young woman from Eastern Europe, arrives in distress at Peter's office. Her baby has been stolen and she accuses her former employer, Jack Thriplow - a local farmer - of taking her child. Peter discovers that Thriplow has been exploiting immigrant workers - which is what drove Aeste onto the streets. Elsewhere, Beatrice continues to cause havoc, and Peter finds out more about his brother.
Lyle goes home to Stockport with his mother to prevent the council from selling off local allotments for a golf course.
A doctor at a research lab that uses animal testing asks Peter to defend her daughter, who has vandalised the unit.
